Custom Hanger Boxes

A hanging pack puts its entire weight, and every knock it takes on a busy shop floor, through one punched hole in card. That hole is the whole engineering problem, and it is the part most briefs never mention.

Hole shapes, and why the euro slot won

The euro slot is not decoration. Its lower opening lets the hook bear against two shoulders rather than one arc, which roughly doubles what the same card will carry.

Round holeSimplest; concentrates load on a small arc and tears first
Euro slotKeyhole shape; spreads load down the sides, the retail standard
Delta slotTriangular; similar to euro, common on heavier packs
Adhesive hang tabStuck on afterwards; retro-fits any pack, and peels

Measure the hook strips in the shops you actually sell into. A slot at the wrong height means the pack hangs crooked, and crooked packs get moved to a shelf.

Reinforcement above 300gsm

Below about 300gsm the card tears before the hole distorts. Above it, the hole distorts and then tears, usually after a few dozen shoppers have lifted the pack and put it back.

A reinforcing patch — a second layer of card bonded behind the slot — costs very little and changes the failure rate substantially. On anything above about 300 g of product it should be assumed rather than requested.

Five-panel hangers, and what the fifth panel is for

  • A five-panel hanger box is a carton with an extended back panel carrying the hang slot.
  • The panel folds up above the box, so the slot is not cut into the pack itself.
  • That keeps the box intact and puts the branding at eye level on a hook strip.
  • It uses more board than a slot cut into the box, and it fails far less often.
Close detail of the print finish on hanger boxes

The header is the most valuable strip on the pack

On a hook strip, packs overlap each other. The only part of yours reliably visible is the band above the hang hole and the top of the pack behind it — often less than 40 mm.

Put the product name and the brand there at a size readable from a meter, and treat the rest of the face as secondary. It is the same overlap logic as any stacked or racked display, set out in our retail display notes.

Hanger Boxes in an alternative colorway

Weight is the limit, not the wish

Card and a punched slot will carry a few hundred grams comfortably, half a kilogram with reinforcement, and beyond that the pack belongs on a shelf rather than a hook.

Retailers know this and will move a heavy hanging pack to a shelf themselves, which loses you the position you designed for. Be honest about the weight before choosing the format.

Boards

  • Natural kraft
  • White SBS
  • E and B flute
  • Wrapped grayboard
  • Food-grade board
  • Recycled content

Chosen from what goes in the box and how far it travels. Our notes on recyclable and compostable stocks say which claims each board can carry.

Finishes

  • Matte
  • Gloss
  • Soft-touch
  • Foil
  • Emboss
  • Spot UV
  • Kraft
  • Textured

Each one is a decision about light on a shelf — the specialty finishes range shows them on real boxes.

Artwork

  • Vector PDF or AI, fonts outlined
  • 3 mm bleed, 4 mm safe area
  • CMYK; a spot color where a match must hold
  • Proof on the dieline before press

Files not set up that way are fine — see the guide to preparing print files.

Frequently asked questions

Got a question about hanger boxes? The answers below cover what we get asked most. If yours is not here, send it with a brief, message us on WhatsApp, or call +1 503-461-4788 — we reply the same working day.

Which hole shape should I use?

A euro slot in almost every case. It bears on two shoulders rather than one arc and carries roughly twice the weight.

When do I need reinforcement?

Above 300gsm card, or above about 300 g of product. It costs very little and it is what stops packs ending up on the floor.

What is a five-panel hanger?

A carton with an extended back panel carrying the slot above the box, so the pack itself is not cut into.

How heavy can a hanging pack be?

A few hundred grams plainly, around half a kilo reinforced. Beyond that retailers move it to a shelf themselves.

What is the minimum order?

100 units, any build.

Where should the branding sit on a hanging pack?

On the band above the hang hole. On a hook strip packs overlap, and that band is the only part reliably visible.
