What replaced PFAS in grease-resistant packaging
For decades, grease resistance in paper packaging came from fluorochemicals. They worked extremely well and they do not break down. Four markets are now restricting them, which means every food brand has a specification decision to make.
Why the change happened
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances repel both water and oil, which is exactly what a chip box needs. The same chemistry means they persist in the environment and in people, and regulators across the US, UK, EU and Australia have moved from monitoring them to restricting them.
For a brand, this is not really a compliance question — it is a supply question. Coated stock that was standard three years ago is being withdrawn by the mills, and a spec that depends on it will eventually simply be unavailable.
The three replacements, honestly compared
Notice that none of them is strictly better. The fluorine-free coating is the closest thing to a default, and it is what we spec unless the food is wet or hot.

Match the barrier to the food, not to the story
The venting point matters more than most brands expect; our note on steam in food boxes covers why a vent beats a better coating for anything fried.
- Dry and warm — pastry, bread, cookies: fluorine-free coating is enough.
- Oily and warm — fried chicken, chips: coating plus venting, because steam is the real enemy.
- Wet — curry, saucy dishes: PE lamination, or a separate liner. Nothing else holds.
- Cold and wet — salads, poke: PLA lining works and keeps the compostable claim.
What you can and cannot claim
A box with a fluorine-free coating is recyclable with paper in most municipal streams. A PE-laminated box is not, whatever the packaging says. A PLA-lined box is compostable commercially and almost never in a garden heap, and saying "compostable" without that qualifier is the kind of claim that attracts attention.
We will tell you which claim your specification actually supports. It is a shorter list than most suppliers imply.
If a supplier will not name the barrier chemistry on a spec sheet, treat that as an answer.

Does grease-resistant board still work without them?
Yes. Modern grease-resistant boards achieve it in the fiber or with water-based barriers, and they handle most food service grease well.

Which foods are hardest on a PFAS-free barrier?
Very hot oil and long contact — fries held for a long time, or butter-rich pastry stored warm. Test with your actual product.
Is PFAS-free board recyclable?
Generally yes, and more so than PFAS-treated board. It is one of the few changes that helps both barrier claims and recyclability.
Do I need to declare PFAS-free on the pack?
Not usually, but where regulation applies you may need to demonstrate it. We supply declarations for the boards we print on.
Which markets restrict PFAS in packaging?
It varies and is changing — several US states, and the EU is moving. Ask your compliance adviser for your specific markets.
Do you supply PFAS-treated board at all?
No. We use fluorine-free coatings, PE lamination or PLA lining depending on what is going in the box.
Is fluorine-free as good as the old treatment?
For dry and lightly oily food, close enough that most brands notice no difference. For wet food it is not, and lamination is the honest answer.
Will a coated box still recycle?
A fluorine-free coated box repulps with paper. A PE-laminated one does not, and should not be labeled as though it does.
