Custom Soap Boxes

Soap shrinks as it cures. A bar measured on the day it is cut can be several millimeters smaller two weeks later, and a sleeve sized to the fresh bar will slide straight off the cured one. Nothing else on this site has a product that moves like this.

Measure a cured bar, never a fresh one

Cold-process soap can lose a meaningful share of its water weight over four to six weeks, and it loses it in every direction. Cut a batch, cure it fully, and measure three bars from the middle of the tray rather than the ends.

If you have not cured a batch yet, tell us the recipe type and the fresh dimensions and we will size with an allowance. It is a guess, but it is an informed one, and it beats sizing to a bar that will never exist again.

Melt-and-pour and syndet bars barely move. Cold process moves most. Which one you make changes the tolerance we build in.

Sleeve, holster or full carton

The trade-off is simple and worth stating plainly: the more of the bar you cover, the longer the fragrance lasts and the less the customer can smell it in a shop. Artisan brands that sell in person almost always choose a sleeve for that reason alone.

SleeveA printed band; cheapest, shows the bar, no protection
HolsterWraps three sides with an open face; holds a wet bar well
Tuck cartonEncloses the bar completely; best for fragrance retention
Two-piece boxGift and set packaging, usually with an insert

Fragrance oils will attack the wrong board

Essential oils and fragrance oils migrate. Against uncoated board they wick into the fiber and leave a translucent halo around the bar, which looks like damage and makes the print go patchy. Against a coated inner face they mostly stay put.

Heavily scented bars, and anything with a high proportion of citrus or mint oil, should either sit on a coated inner or be wrapped in a barrier tissue inside the pack. This is the same failure mode as the moisture problem in bath and cosmetic cartons, running in the opposite direction.

Kraft is the default here for a reason worth questioning

The category has settled on kraft so thoroughly that a white or colored soap box is now the thing that stands out on a market stall.

  • Uncoated kraft signals handmade and natural, which suits most of the market.
  • It is also the worst surface for oil migration and the weakest for color reproduction.
  • A kraft-look coated board gets the appearance and keeps the barrier.
  • White board with a one-color print costs the same and photographs better online.

What has to be printed on soap

Soap sold as a cosmetic carries an ingredient list in INCI order, a net weight, a batch identifier and a responsible-person address for UK and EU sale. On a sleeve, that occupies most of one face, so decide which face early.

Saponified oils have to be listed by their INCI names rather than their kitchen names, which surprises most small makers the first time. Send us your list as you have it and we will lay it out; the wording itself has to be yours.

Frequently asked questions

Got a question about soap boxes? The answers below cover what we get asked most. If yours is not here, send it with a brief, message us on WhatsApp, or call +1 503-461-4788 — we reply the same working day.

My sleeves are loose — what happened?

The bars almost certainly cured down after you measured. Re-measure a fully cured bar and the next run will fit.

Will the fragrance come through the box?

Through uncoated kraft, yes, which is often deliberate. If you want the scent held, use a closed carton with a coated inner face.

Why is there an oily mark on my boxes?

Oil migration into uncoated board. A coated inner face or a barrier tissue stops it.

Can you print the INCI list for me?

We typeset whatever you supply. Working out the correct INCI names for your recipe is your responsibility.

What is the minimum order?

100 units, sleeves, holsters or cartons.

Melt-and-pour or cold-process — does it change the box?

Yes. Melt-and-pour barely moves; cold-process shrinks measurably during cure, so the tolerance differs.
