Custom Candle Boxes

A candle is heavy, breakable and scented, and it has to carry safety wording that most other gift products do not. That combination means candle packaging is decided by weight and regulation first, and by how it looks a distant third.

The vessel decides the box, and vessels vary

Glass vessels come from molds, and molded glass has real dimensional variation between batches — a millimeter or two on the outer diameter is normal and nobody will tell you about it. A box cut to the exact measured diameter of one jar will refuse to accept a jar from the next delivery.

Measure several vessels from more than one batch if you can, take the largest, and add clearance on top. A candle box that is slightly generous is invisible; one that is slightly tight is a production stoppage.

Measure across the widest point, which on many jars is a rim or a base flare rather than the body.

Weight is the real specification

A filled glass candle is dense in a way that surprises people used to specifying cosmetic cartons. The bottom of the box carries all of it, and a plain tuck base under 400 g of glass will bow, then burst.

Safety wording is not optional and takes real space

Some of that goes on the vessel base label rather than the box, and most brands split it between the two. Decide the split before artwork, because whichever surface carries the allergen list loses a face to it.

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Keep away from children and pets, and from anything that can catch fire.
  • Burn on a heat-resistant surface; trim the wick; stop burning at the specified wax level.
  • Fragrance allergen declarations, which for a heavily scented candle can be a long list.

Dust covers do a job nobody expects

A dust cover — an open-bottomed sleeve or lidless cap that sits over the candle — exists because an unlidded candle collects dust in the wax pool and looks tired within weeks on a shelf. It also lets the customer smell the candle, which a closed box does not.

For retail sold in person, a dust cover plus a base label often outperforms a full carton. For anything sold online or given as a gift, a closed box wins, because the packaging is part of what is being bought.

Candle Boxes in an alternative colorway

Wax melts are a different product entirely

Wax melts are light, unbreakable, sold in small multiples, and usually supplied in a plastic clamshell that needs a printed carton or sleeve around it. The engineering problem disappears and the whole job becomes print and shelf presence.

They stack, which candles do not, so a wax melt carton should be designed to be seen in a stack rather than standing alone — the same shelf logic as our shelf-facing retail cartons.

Candle Boxes beside the product it was made to hold

Windows and the scent you cannot show

A window on a candle box shows the wax color and the vessel, which is genuinely useful for colored or layered candles and pointless for plain white wax in amber glass. What it cannot do is convey scent, which is the actual purchase driver.

Brands that solve this well put the scent notes on the front in plain language, at a size that can be read from a meter away, and treat the window as secondary.

Boards

  • Natural kraft
  • White SBS
  • E and B flute
  • Wrapped grayboard
  • Food-grade board
  • Recycled content

Chosen from what goes in the box and how far it travels. Our notes on recyclable and compostable stocks say which claims each board can carry.

Finishes

  • Matte
  • Gloss
  • Soft-touch
  • Foil
  • Emboss
  • Spot UV
  • Kraft
  • Textured

Each one is a decision about light on a shelf — the specialty finishes range shows them on real boxes.

Artwork

  • Vector PDF or AI, fonts outlined
  • 3 mm bleed, 4 mm safe area
  • CMYK; a spot color where a match must hold
  • Proof on the dieline before press

Files not set up that way are fine — see the guide to preparing print files.

Frequently asked questions

Got a question about candle boxes? The answers below cover what we get asked most. If yours is not here, send it with a brief, message us on WhatsApp, or call +1 503-461-4788 — we reply the same working day.

My jars do not fit the boxes — whose fault is that?

Usually the glass, which varies between batches. We size to the largest vessel you send plus clearance for exactly this reason.

Rigid or folding for a 300 g candle?

Either, with the right board and base. Rigid if it is a gift; a 24pt folding carton with a locking base if it is not.

Can safety wording go only on the box?

Some of it belongs on the vessel so it survives the box being thrown away. Most brands split it.

Do you supply the clamshells for wax melts?

No — we make the printed carton or sleeve that goes around them. Send the clamshell dimensions.

What is the minimum order?

100 boxes, any build.

Is a dust cover better than a box for shop sale?

For retail sold in person, often yes — it keeps dust off and lets the customer smell the candle, which a closed box does not.
