Custom Eco Friendly Boxes

Recycled, recyclable, compostable and biodegradable describe four unrelated properties, and a pack can be one without being any of the others. Most of the disappointment in this category comes from buying the wrong one of the four.

What each word actually claims

A recycled-content box that has been laminated is not recyclable. A compostable film that goes into general waste is landfill. The word on the pack has to match what will actually happen to it where your customers live.

RecycledWhat the board is made from. Says nothing about its next life
RecyclableWhat can happen to it afterwards, if the local stream accepts it
CompostableIt breaks down — but only in the stream it is certified for
BiodegradableAlmost meaningless without a timescale and conditions attached

Of the four, "biodegradable" is the one to avoid printing. It is the least defensible and the most likely to draw a complaint.

The single change that does the most

Keeping a pack to one material beats almost every other decision. A plain kraft carton with no lamination, no window film and a paper label goes into a paper stream intact. Add a gloss laminate and a film window and it does not, whatever it is made from.

That is usually a cheaper pack as well as a cleaner one, which makes it the rare decision with no trade-off.

Where the honest compromises are

None of these is a reason not to do it. They are the things a supplier should tell you before you order rather than after the first run disappoints.

  • Recycled board has a gray-brown cast; bright whites and photographic print suffer on it.
  • Uncoated stock is repulpable and marks more easily in handling.
  • PFAS-free grease barriers work well and cost more than the treatments they replace.
  • Mono-material films recycle and give up some barrier, which costs shelf life.
  • Compostable stocks have a shorter life on the roll and print slightly softer.

Less packaging beats better packaging

A box sized honestly to its contents uses less board, ships in a smaller carrier band and needs less void fill. Removing an insert, dropping a size, or replacing a box with a sleeve does more than switching material ever will.

It is also the change that saves money rather than costing it — the sizing arithmetic is in our guide to how carriers charge by volume.

What we will not print for you

We will not put a claim on a pack that the pack does not support: no compostable mark on a laminated carton, no recyclable symbol on a multi-layer laminate, no leaf imagery on a pack whose only green credential is the ink.

If a claim matters to your customers, we will tell you what the pack would have to become to earn it, and quote that instead.

Each one is a decision about light on a shelf — the specialty finishes range shows them on real boxes.

Artwork

  • Vector PDF or AI, fonts outlined
  • 3 mm bleed, 4 mm safe area
  • CMYK; a spot color where a match must hold
  • Proof on the dieline before press

Frequently asked questions

Got a question about eco friendly boxes? The answers below cover what we get asked most. If yours is not here, send it with a brief, message us on WhatsApp, or call +1 503-461-4788 — we reply the same working day.

Is recycled board recyclable?

Only if nothing has been added to it. A laminate or a film window takes it out of the paper stream whatever it was made from.

Should I use compostable material?

Only where the whole pack composts and the waste stream exists. On its own it is often a more expensive route to landfill.

What is the single best change I can make?

Keep the pack to one material, and make it smaller. Both usually cost less rather than more.

Will you print a recyclable symbol for me?

Only if the finished pack earns it. We will tell you what would have to change, and quote that.

What is the minimum order?

100 units, on any stock we offer.

Which word should I avoid printing?

'Biodegradable'. It is the least defensible of the four claims and the most likely to draw a complaint.
