Where the box will actually be seen
This is the question worth answering before any of the others. A finish that is stunning on a counter can be invisible on a shelf, and a foil that photographs beautifully under studio lights can be unreadable under a supermarket strip.

What each process actually is
- Hot foil. Metal leaf pressed onto the board with a heated die. Genuinely metallic, unlike any printed silver or gold.
- Emboss and deboss. The board is pressed into a shape. No ink, no color, and the effect depends entirely on shadow.
- Spot UV. Gloss varnish on selected areas only. Strongest on a matte field, invisible on a gloss one.
- Soft touch. A matte laminate with a velvet feel. Superb in the hand, and it holds grease marks from fingers.
- Textured stock. The texture is in the paper, so it cannot scuff off. The most durable premium effect available.
Tooling, and why the second run is cheaper
Foil and embossing both need a metal die cut to your artwork. That die is a one-off cost, it belongs to your job, and it is reusable — so a repeat order pays for the process but not the tool.
This changes the arithmetic on small runs. A 100-unit first order carrying a foil die looks expensive per box; the same order repeated three times does not. If you expect to reorder, the die is an investment rather than a cost.
Keep foil artwork simple. Fine hairlines and small type fill in at the edges, and the die cannot hold detail below about 0.5 mm.
Combinations that work, and one that does not
Soft touch with a spot UV is the most reliable premium pairing we run: the matte field makes the gloss shapes read from across a room. Foil on uncoated dark stock is the second, because the metal is the only reflective thing on the surface.
Foil over soft touch is the combination that disappoints. The laminate softens the edge of the foil and the metallic loses most of its brightness — if you want both, foil onto the board and laminate around it.
What finishes cannot fix
A finish does not make a badly proportioned box look right, and it does not rescue a weak structure. A soft-touch carton with a base that bows still reads as cheap, because people judge weight and rigidity before they notice surface.
Spend on the construction first. If the budget only stretches to one of the two, a plain box that is properly built beats a decorated one that is not — which is the same argument set out in our rigid box construction notes.
