The textures, and what each does

LinenA fine woven cross-hatch; the classic for stationery and cosmetics
LaidParallel lines from the mold; traditional; suits one-color print
FeltA soft, slightly fibrous surface; warm; wine and food gifts
RibbedFine parallel ridges; modern; strong under foil
Hammered or leather-grainDeeper relief; luxury and spirits

Texture breaks up a solid print — ink sits on the peaks and less in the valleys — so full-coverage color and photographs look mottled. One or two colors, a pattern, and type over 8pt print well. Foil sits on the peaks and reads as a textured foil, which is the look most brands want from it. A blind deboss on a textured board is one of the quietest premium marks there is.

Board weights and structures

Our velvet-wrapped rigid boxes are the textured finish taken to its softest.

  • 280–350 gsm textured cover stock for sleeves, bands and light cartons.
  • 18–24pt textured boxboard for cartons that stand and carry.
  • Textured paper wrapped on grayboard for a rigid box — the same look on a rigid structure.
  • A plain inside face on most textured boards; a printed liner where the inside is seen.

Where texture earns its keep

Cosmetics and skincare, stationery and invitations, wine and spirits sleeves, chocolate and tea, jewelry sleeves, and any box that is handled at a counter rather than pulled from a shelf. Because the finish hides fingerprints and small marks, it is also the practical choice for a box that is handled a lot.

Textured boards are a little less stiff than a coated board of the same weight. We size up a step where the box carries weight.

Sampling the texture

Texture is chosen in the hand. We send swatches of the boards under consideration, and a plain sample of the box in the chosen board before print, because the same linen reads differently in white, cream and black.

Frequently asked questions

Got a question about textured cardstock boxes? The answers below cover what we get asked most. If yours is not here, send it with a brief, message us on WhatsApp, or call +1 503-461-4788 — we reply the same working day.

Is the texture a laminate?

No. It is in the board itself — linen, laid, felt, ribbed — so nothing can scuff or peel off.

Can I print full color on textured board?

Not well; the texture mottles solid color and photographs. One or two colors, patterns and type print cleanly, and foil looks especially good.

Does foil work on texture?

Yes, and it takes on the texture, which is the look most brands want from it.

What colors are available?

White, cream, kraft and black in most textures, and a range of stock colors depending on the texture.

Can a rigid box be textured?

Yes, with textured paper wrapped on grayboard.

What is the minimum order?

100 boxes.

Is textured board as strong as coated board?

A little less stiff at the same weight. We size up a step where the box carries weight.

Does it hide fingerprints?

Yes, better than any laminate, which makes it the practical choice for a handled box.

Can I get swatches?

Yes, swatches of the boards and then a plain sample of the box in the one you choose.

Can the inside be printed?

Yes, on the plain inside face, or with a printed liner on a rigid box.

Do textured cartons ship flat?

Yes, like any carton. Rigid wrapped boxes ship assembled.

Do you ship outside the US?

Yes, to the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, quoted in the delivery currency.
