Cut the window where the box is not working hardest
A box carries its load down the corners and the vertical edges. A window cut into the middle of a face takes very little structural strength; one cut close to a corner or wrapping around an edge takes a great deal.
Keep at least 15 mm of board at every corner and the box behaves almost as though the window were not there. Wrap the window around a corner and it will bow under the weight of a filled jar.
That weight is what sets the board, and the grades a filled candle needs are worth reading before the window is placed.
The base is unaffected by a window in a wall, and the base is what actually fails. Specify it for the filled weight regardless.
Filmed or open, and what each admits
For a scented candle sold in person, an open die-cut is often better than film. Smell is the purchase, and a sealed window blocks the one sense that sells the product.

The vessel varies, so build to the largest
Molded glass differs measurably between batches, and the widest point is often a rim or a base flare rather than the body. A window sized to one jar can end up framing the wrong part of the next delivery.
Measure several vessels across their widest point, build to the largest, and position the window against that — the batch variation detail is in our candle packaging notes.
Light is not neutral for a candle
- Colored and natural-dyed waxes fade in direct light through a window.
- Soy and coconut blends can develop surface frosting that a window displays perfectly.
- Essential-oil scented candles lose top notes faster with an open window.
- A shop window display is the worst case for all three at once.
What still has to fit around the opening
Burn safety wording, fragrance allergen declarations, net weight and batch all have to appear legibly, and a window has just removed a face that might have carried them.
Most brands split the text between the box and a base label on the vessel. Decide that split before the window is positioned, not after.

Boards and films we build candle boxes with window on

Unbleached folding board. Warm, hides marks, costs least. Mutes color — one or two flat colors print well, photographs do not.

A kraft face over a coated inner. The natural look with a barrier behind it — the answer where oil, grease or moisture would mark plain kraft.

Post-consumer fiber with a gray-brown cast. Right for outers and inner components; poor for bright whites and photography.

A fine corrugated layer where a carton needs structure it cannot get from board — a large panel, a heavy product, a box that ships alone.

No clay coat, or a linen or laid grain. Print reads softer and warmer; a deboss goes deeper. Photographs do not sit well on it.

Format
Vector PDF or AI where possible. Raster artwork at 300dpi at final size, in CMYK.
Bleed
3 mm past every trim line, so a fraction of drift on the cutter never leaves a white edge.
Safe area
Keep type and anything important 4 mm inside the cut and away from every fold.
Color
Convert to CMYK before sending. Uncoated stock prints lighter; a spot color is the only exact match.
Fonts
Outline them or supply the files. A missing font substitutes silently and the proof will not match.
Barcodes
On a light, matte, unvarnished patch with the quiet zone clear — a code on gloss fails the scanner.

Sizing a folding carton so the die comes out right: candle boxes with window
Measure the product, not the box it is in now. A carton is built around what has to fit inside it, assembled — cap on, lid fitted, folded if it folds — at its widest point in each direction. Send those three numbers and say which is which.
- Length x width x height
- Internal, always. External dimensions include the board and are what the carrier measures, not what the product needs.
- Clearance
- 2–3 mm a side for a snug fit; more where an insert or void fill goes in. A carton cut exactly to the product is slow to pack and transmits every knock.
- Board thickness
- Heavier board takes internal space from the product. It matters most on small boxes, where four walls of 24pt is a real share of the cavity.
- Varies between batches?
- Glass, textiles, molded parts and cured soap all do. Measure several and build to the largest.
- Cutting tolerance
- Plus or minus 1 mm on folding board. Confirmed on a plain sample before the run.
- Units
- Metric or imperial, as long as you say which. Mixing them in one spec is where mistakes happen.
