Custom Soap Gift Boxes

A soap gift set is two problems in one box: the bars are heavier than they look, and fragrance oil migrates into uncoated board within weeks. Both are solved at the specification stage, not after the first batch ghosts through the lid.

Styles
Sleeve, straight tuck, two-piece rigid, drawer, window
Board
12–24pt SBS or kraft; 2 mm grayboard for rigid

What fragrance does to board

Essential and fragrance oils are solvents. Left against bare kraft they wick outward, darken the fiber and eventually carry the smell of one bar into every other bar in the set. On a plain uncoated box the first sign is a translucent halo where a bar has been resting.

Three specifications stop it. A poly or aqueous coating on the inside face, a wrap around each bar so the oil never touches board, or a rigid box with a lined tray. Which one you want depends on whether the buyer opens the box in the shop or six weeks after posting.

If you are cold-process and still curing, tell us — green soap keeps releasing oil and needs the coated spec even for short storage.

Three ways brands present a set

Most first orders we quote are the sleeve version, and most repeat orders move up to rigid once the brand starts selling into shops. You can see both in our printed soap sleeve options.

  • Tuck-end with a printed sleeve. Cheapest per unit, flat-packs for storage, and the sleeve carries the ingredient panel so the box art stays clean.
  • Two-piece rigid with a tray. The set holds its shape in a hamper and the tray stops bars sliding into each other. Heavier, and it ships assembled.
  • Drawer box. Reads as a gift the moment the buyer pulls it. Needs a tolerance check — a drawer that binds on a humid day is worse than no drawer.

Sizing to the bar, not to a catalog

There is no standard soap bar. A cut-and-cure loaf bar is typically 3.5 × 2.5 × 1 in; molded bars run smaller and rounder. We build the die from your bar, with 1–2 mm of clearance per side so the box closes without crushing the corners.

Send us one bar, or the mold dimensions plus your shrink allowance. If the bars vary batch to batch, quote us the largest one — a box that is 1 mm generous is invisible, a box that is 1 mm tight is a return.

What has to be on the box

Cosmetics rules differ across the four markets we ship to and they land on the label, not on us — but they change how much printable area you need. US brands need the ingredient list in INCI order and a net weight in both metric and US customary. UK and EU brands add a responsible person address and a period-after-opening mark.

Plan for that panel before the artwork is drawn. The most common reprint we see is a beautiful box with nowhere legal to put the ingredients.

Frequently asked questions

Got a question about soap gift boxes? The answers below cover what we get asked most. If yours is not here, send it with a brief, message us on WhatsApp, or call +1 503-461-4788 — we reply the same working day.

What is the minimum order?

100 boxes, sized to your cured bars.

Why are my boxes loose?

The bars cured down after you measured. Cold-process soap loses water for weeks — size to a cured bar.

Will fragrance escape a closed box?

Through uncoated kraft, yes, which is often deliberate. A coated inner face holds the scent in.

How many bars fit in a set box?

As many as you specify — we cut a divided tray to the count and the cured bar size.

Do I need dividers?

Between bars, yes. Without them the bars rub and the printed faces scuff each other.

Can the box be reused?

A lid-and-base build survives being opened and is often kept, which is worth more than the extra board costs.

Will the box smell of the soap after a few weeks?

Not if the inner face is coated or the bars are wrapped. Uncoated board against a cured bar will pick up fragrance within about three to six weeks, faster in heat. Tell us the bars go in naked and we will spec the coating by default.

Can you make one box that fits two different bar sizes?

Yes, by building the die to the larger bar and adding a paperboard insert that packs out the smaller one. It costs less than two dies and stops the small bar rattling.

Do I need a window?

Only if the bar is the selling point. Windows add a film liner, a die cut and a small cost, and they let light at the soap — which fades natural colourants faster than most brands expect.

What is the smallest order?

100 sets. Below that the die and set-up dominate the price and you are better off with a printed sleeve on a stock box.

How is a gift set priced against plain boxes?

By area of board, number of pieces and finishing. A three-bar rigid set with a tray is roughly four times a single sleeve, not three, because the tray is a separate die.
