Volatile contents and the board that absorbs them

Uncoated paperboard is a sponge for aromatic oil. A single drip from a dropper cap, wiped off and forgotten, will wick through a kraft carton in a week and arrive at the printed face as a dark ring that never dries. The scent goes with it, and it does not stay put: a case of lavender cartons stacked next to a case of peppermint cartons will swap notes in a warehouse.

The answer is a coated inner face on every surface the bottle can touch, including the tray of a set box. We build aroma boxes on SBS or a coated recycled board with the coating to the inside, and we keep kraft on the outside where brands want the natural look.

Sets, and the divider that keeps glass apart

Glass against glass is what breaks a set in transit, not glass against board. The well spacing needs at least 3 mm of board between adjacent bottles, and the tray must sit below the shoulder so the bottles cannot lean and touch at the caps.

  • Single 5–15 ml bottle: a snug tuck-end carton, no insert, the bottle held by its own fit.
  • Single 30–100 ml bottle: the same carton with a shoulder collar, or the bottle drums against the walls.
  • Set of 3–6: a folding carton with a die-cut paperboard platform, each bottle in its own well.
  • Set of 6–12: a rigid lift-off lid or drawer box with a slotted tray, sized so caps clear the lid.

A dark bottle in a range of thirty scents

Amber and cobalt glass hide the product entirely, so the carton carries the whole visual difference between a eucalyptus and a bergamot. Ranges of twenty or thirty scents are normal in this category, and the economical way to print them is a shared structure with one panel — usually the front — carrying the variable color and name, and the rest of the carton printed identically across the run.

That lets us gang the shared panels and change only a plate or a digital file per scent. It also means the die is cut once and kept for reorders, so adding a new scent later is a print job rather than a new box, which is how most of the essential oil cartons we make are run.

Close detail of the print finish on aroma boxes

Dropper caps, reducer caps and what each does to the height

A 10 ml bottle with an orifice reducer and a screw cap stands about 65 mm. The same bottle with a glass pipette dropper stands 75 mm or more, and the rubber bulb is wider than the neck. Cartons are routinely sized to the bottle catalog drawing and then fail to close over the dropper the brand actually fitted. Measure the assembled bottle, cap on, and send us that number, or send us three bottles and we will measure them ourselves.

Pipette droppers loosen in transit and the bulb can be left standing proud of the neck. Allow 2 mm above the assembled height rather than sizing it tight.

Cartons that sit on a shelf and go into a padded mailer

Most aroma boxes are sold twice: on a retail shelf, where they stand in rows and only the front face is seen, and online, where they travel inside a padded mailer or a small shipping carton. The carton should not be asked to survive the post on its own. A 16–18 pt tuck carton is right for the shelf; for direct dispatch, pair it with an outer sized to the carton rather than thickening the carton itself, using the approach in our rigid or folding carton guide.

Frequently asked questions

Got a question about aroma boxes? The answers below cover what we get asked most. If yours is not here, send it with a brief, message us on WhatsApp, or call +1 503-461-4788 — we reply the same working day.

What is an aroma box?

A printed carton or set box for scented products — essential oils, diffuser blends, roll-on oils and aromatherapy sets. It is built around the bottle and, unlike a plain carton, has a coated inner face so the oil does not wick into the board.

Will the oil stain the box?

On uncoated board, yes, within days of a drip. On the coated inner face we use as standard it wipes off, which is why we do not build aroma boxes on plain kraft inside.

Can I have a kraft look outside?

Yes. Kraft-backed SBS gives a brown natural outside with a coated white inside, so you get the look without the staining.

Which bottle sizes do you fit?

Any, but 5, 10, 15 and 30 ml dropper bottles are the bulk of what we make. Send the assembled height and diameter with the cap fitted.

Do I need an insert for a single bottle?

Not for 5–15 ml if the carton is sized snugly. From 30 ml up a shoulder collar stops the bottle drumming against the walls.

How do you keep set bottles from clinking?

A die-cut platform or slotted tray with at least 3 mm of board between wells, set low enough that the bottles cannot lean and meet at the caps.

Can one die cover a range of thirty scents?

Yes. The structure is shared and only the front panel changes, so each scent is a print change rather than a new box, and the die is kept for reorders.

What is the minimum order?

100 units per structure. Within that you can split artwork across scents; a set box and a single carton are two structures.

Is the box strong enough to post?

A shelf carton is not built for the post on its own. We pair it with a mailer or a small shipper sized to the carton, which costs less than thickening every carton.

Do you send a dieline before I order?

Yes, with the quote, the same working day. It is yours to keep whether or not you go ahead.

Can you print the inside of the lid?

Yes, on both folding and rigid set boxes. On a set box the inside of the lid is the first thing seen on opening, and it prints for very little extra.

Do you supply a proof?

Always, before anything goes to press, and we hold the job until it is approved.

Can I add a window?

You can, but the bottle is amber or cobalt and the label is small, so a window usually shows a dark shape and little else. Most brands spend the money on foil or a second color instead.

Where are you able to deliver?
