Sized to the count, not the roll
A sushi tray is designed around how many pieces sit in it and in what arrangement: a single row of eight, two rows of six, a roll cut into ten with a corner for nigiri. The tray floor gets a light emboss or a printed grid so the pieces stay where they were placed, and the internal length is set to the piece count with a small allowance so the last piece is not jammed.
Tell us the menu — the standard roll counts and the largest combo — and we build the tray family around those rather than around a generic size.

The lid is the shop window
A clear PET lid shows the arrangement and is what most sushi retail uses. The problem is condensation: cold rice under a lid in a warm shop fogs within minutes. An anti-fog PET grade keeps the lid clear for the display life, and it is the single most worthwhile upgrade in this category. A printed paperboard lid with a window gives more brand space and is the choice for delivery, where nobody sees the box until it is opened.
The lid should clip, not just rest. Sushi is carried flat in a bag with other things on top, and a lid that lifts lets the pieces slide.
Board that copes with rice
Sushi rice is wet and vinegared, and it sits on the tray floor for hours. Plain paperboard softens and lets the vinegar through to the outer print. We use a food-grade board with a moisture barrier on the food side — an aqueous or a PLA-lined grade, both without fluorinated chemistry. For delivery the tray goes in an outer sleeve or a sealed bag; the tray itself does not need to be leak-tight, only to stay firm.
Where the soy sauce goes
- A corner well pressed into the tray for wasabi and ginger — cheap, and keeps them off the rice.
- A separate cell along one edge for a sauce sachet and chopsticks.
- A two-compartment tray for a roll plus edamame or salad.
- For delivery kits, an outer box holding the tray and the sides together, on the same lines as the compartment build we use for fast food boxes with meal compartments.

Boards and films we build sushi boxes on
Food packaging is chosen for what the food does to it: grease, steam, heat and time. Every board here is food-contact grade, and none of them uses a PFAS treatment for grease resistance.
Food-grade virgin board
Bleached board made for direct food contact. Clean, bright, no recycled fiber and no mineral-oil risk from recovered paper.
14–24ptGrease-resistant board
Resistance built into the sheet rather than sprayed on. Holds fries, pastry and butter without darkening. PFAS-free.
16–24ptPE-lined cupstock
Board with a polyethylene film for hot and cold liquid. Microwave-safe for reheating; recycled only where cup collection exists.
260–350gsmAqueous-lined cupstock
A water-based lining instead of PE. Repulpable in ordinary paper recycling in more places, and compostable; a slightly shorter hold time.
260–320gsmGreaseproof and glassine
Dense, calendered paper that resists fat through the fiber. Wraps, liners and interleaves; breathable, so pastry stays crisp.

E and B flute with a food-contact liner, vented where steam has to leave. Pizza, catering and anything hot and heavy.

The die is cut once and kept, so every reorder skips the tooling and goes straight to press at a lower unit price.
Format
Vector PDF or AI where possible. Raster artwork at 300dpi at final size, in CMYK.
Bleed
3 mm past every trim line, so a fraction of drift on the cutter never leaves a white edge.
Safe area
Keep type and anything important 4 mm inside the cut and away from every fold.
Color
Convert to CMYK before sending. Uncoated stock prints lighter; a spot color is the only exact match.
Fonts
Outline them or supply the files. A missing font substitutes silently and the proof will not match.
Barcodes
On a light, matte, unvarnished patch with the quiet zone clear — a code on gloss fails the scanner.

Food finishes are limited by what may touch food, and that is the point.
Food-safe inks
Printed on the outer face only. Every food pack we make uses them, laminated or not.
Uncoated kraft
No coating at all. Breathable, so pastry stays crisp, and it takes one or two colors.
Aqueous varnish
Scuff resistance without a plastic film, so the pack still repulps.
Molded emboss
A logo pressed into pulp or bagasse. No ink, nothing to rub off, and it survives grease.
Grease-resistant face
Not a finish you can see. It is in the sheet, it is PFAS-free, and it is why the print stays clean.
Matte lamination
Available on outers and sleeves that never touch food — a cake box lid, a carrier, a gift sleeve.

Sizing food packaging around a portion, hot: sushi boxes
Food is sized by serving, not by dimensions, and it is served hot, heaped and in a hurry. Send us the portion — or better, the box you use now with the food in it — and we size to how it is actually filled.
- Portion, heaped
- Fries, popcorn and salad are served above the rim. A box sized to a level fill looks mean and spills in a bag.
- Lid clearance
- Enough that a loaded burger or a topped cake does not touch the lid. This is the single most common complaint about a food box.
- Venting
- Hot food steams. Vents in the lid keep pastry and fries crisp; a sealed box is right only for cold food.
- Grease path
- Where the fat sits decides the board. Say if the food is fried, buttered or sauced, and whether it is held for minutes or an hour.
- Stacking in a bag
- Delivery boxes are stacked five high on a bike. The lid has to hold the box above it off the food below.
- Sample fill
- A plain box filled from your kitchen settles the size in one try, and we send one before the run.

What size box for an 8-piece roll?
About 7.5 × 3.5 in as a single row. Send us your actual roll cut and we size the tray to it with a small allowance.
Does the lid fog up?
Plain PET does, within minutes. We use an anti-fog grade for display sushi, which keeps the lid clear for its shelf life.
Is the board safe for raw fish?
Yes — food-grade paperboard with a moisture barrier on the food side, with no fluorinated chemistry. Sushi is chilled, so the board is a cold-contact application.
Will the rice make the box soggy?
Not through the barrier grade. Plain paperboard would soften and let vinegar through to the print, which is why we do not use it for sushi.
Can I have a place for wasabi and ginger?
Yes, a corner well pressed into the tray. It keeps them off the rice and costs nothing extra once it is in the tooling.
Can the lid be printed?
Yes, as a paperboard lid with a window. It gives more brand space than a clear lid and suits delivery, where the box is not on display.
Does the lid stay on in a delivery bag?
With a clip-fit lid, yes. A rest-on lid lifts when the bag is carried flat with other items on top, so we build a clip as standard.
Is the box recyclable?
The paperboard tray with an aqueous barrier is; a PET lid is recyclable separately. A paperboard lid with a small window keeps more of the pack in one stream.
Can you make a party platter?
Yes, a large paperboard base with a domed clear lid. Send the layout you plate and we size the base to it.
What is the minimum order for sushi boxes?
100 boxes per size. An 8-piece tray, a 12–16 piece tray and a party platter each count as a separate size.
What adds time to a sushi box order?
The moisture-barrier board grade, an anti-fog PET or windowed paperboard lid, and pressed corner wells in the tray. We give a date with the quote.
Will you send a sample?
An unprinted tray and lid in your size, so you can plate a roll in it before we print.
