Custom Snack Packaging
Snack packaging is unusual in that it is used, not just opened. The pack is held in one hand and reached into repeatedly, often while walking or driving, which makes its shape a usability question rather than a presentation one.

The opening has to admit a hand
A tall narrow carton of anything eaten by hand is a design failure at the bottom third, where fingers can no longer reach without tipping the whole pack. That is why fry cartons flare outwards and why sharing packs are wide rather than deep.
Measure the opening against a hand, not against the volume. A pack that has to be tipped to empty gets tipped over a car seat sooner or later.
A scoop-shaped front, cut lower than the back, makes a fry carton far easier to eat from and costs nothing on the die.

Grease travels, and it travels fast
Fried snacks reach the outside of an uncoated carton in minutes, and the mark spreads. That looks like a leak, transfers to hands and clothes, and is the single most common complaint in this category.
Grease-resistant food-grade board handles it without a PFAS treatment, which keeps the pack repulpable — the barrier options are set out in our notes on PFAS-free barriers.

Formats, and what each one is for
| Fry carton | Flared open top; eaten from directly, holds heat briefly |
|---|---|
| Fry cup | Fits a car cup holder, which is why drive-through uses it |
| Snack box | Combination meals; compartments or a divider |
| Cracker carton | Dry, needs a sealed inner for shelf life |
| Sharing tray | Wide and shallow; several people reaching in at once |

Dry snacks need a barrier; hot snacks need to breathe
This is the fastest way to get snack packaging wrong: applying the crisp-packet logic to a hot product, or the fry-carton logic to a shelf-stable one.
- A cracker or crisp needs a sealed inner bag or it goes soft within days.
- A hot fried snack needs vents or steam will soften it within minutes.
- The two requirements are opposites, and one pack cannot do both.
- Decide which product you are packing before anything else is specified.

Printing on something held while eating
No gloss varnish where fingers and food meet, which rules out the shiniest finishes on the inner face and the rim. Beyond that, snack packs are seen close and often in poor light — a car, a street, a cinema.
Large simple artwork and strong contrast survive that. A pack designed to be admired on a shelf at arm's length often disappears in the situation it is actually used in.

Stacking and nesting in a busy kitchen
Fry cartons and cups are stored by the thousand behind a counter, and a format that nests takes a fraction of the shelf space of one that does not. In a small kitchen that is a genuine constraint on what you can buy.
Flat-packed cartons save the most space and cost seconds per unit to assemble. Nesting cups save less space and no time. Which trade-off suits depends on how busy the pass is.

Frequently asked questions
Got a question about snack packaging? The answers below cover what we get asked most. If yours is not here, send it with a brief, message us on WhatsApp, or call +1 503-461-4788 — we reply the same working day.
Why does grease show through my cartons?
Uncoated board wicks it in minutes. Grease-resistant food-grade board stops it and still recycles.
Can one pack work for hot fries and packaged crisps?
No. One needs to vent and the other needs to seal. They are opposite requirements.
Why do fry cartons flare at the top?
So a hand can reach in. A straight-sided carton becomes unusable in its bottom third.
Flat-packed or pre-formed?
Flat-packed saves the most storage and costs seconds per unit. In a small kitchen that trade is usually worth it.
What is the minimum order?
100 units, any format.
Why no gloss varnish on the inside?
Because that is where food and fingers meet. Varnish is not a food-contact surface.
