The flare is doing three jobs at once

A popcorn box is wider at the top than the bottom. That lets a hand in easily, lets the popcorn mound above the rim so the portion looks generous, and lets empty boxes nest so a cinema can store a night's worth behind the counter.

A straight-sided box does none of the three. It is the same shape logic as a fry carton, scaled up and taken further.

Nesting matters more than people expect. A flared box stacks to a fraction of the height of the same box with straight sides.

Formats, and where each belongs

Bags are cheaper and worse at everything except cost. If people put the pack down while eating — a cinema seat, a table — a bag empties itself and a box does not.

Butter, oil and what reaches the outside

Buttered popcorn is a grease test that runs for the whole time the pack is held. Uncoated board shows the mark within minutes and transfers it to hands and clothes.

Grease-resistant food-grade board handles it without a plastic coating, which keeps the box repulpable — the same barrier reasoning as across our snack packaging range.

Portion sizes, honestly

• Popcorn is sold by volume, and volume is what the customer judges.
• A box that looks generous when mounded looks mean when levelled.
• Going a size up costs very little board — popcorn packs are mostly air.
• Three sizes covers almost every venue: single, regular and sharing.

Print that has to work in a dark room

Cinema packaging is chosen under counter lighting and then carried into a dark auditorium, where nobody reads it. So the print is working for about ninety seconds, at the counter, in a queue.

That argues for big, simple, high-contrast artwork and a strong silhouette rather than detail. The classic red and white stripe survives because it reads instantly at any size, in any light, from any angle.
