Cereal Boxes

Custom Oatmeal Boxes

Oats are dense. A porridge carton the same size as a flaked-cereal box weighs roughly double, and almost every failure in this product comes from specifying it as though it were the lighter one it resembles.

The base is the part that gives

A 1 kg carton of oats picked up by its sides puts all of that weight on the base flaps at once. A plain tuck bottom holds it for a while and then works loose, usually in a customer's kitchen rather than in transit.

A locking or auto-lock base on the same board is stronger than a tuck base on much heavier board, and cheaper. Step the base build up before stepping the whole carton up.

Weigh a filled sample. Density surprises people here more than in any other dry good we pack.

Loose oats or sachets, and how the box changes

A sachet carton is dimensioned by the stack — sachet width, sachet thickness times the count, plus a little. Sizing it to a nominal weight of oats produces a box the sachets rattle in.

Loose, no innerCheapest; oats take on moisture and the carton is not a barrier
Loose with a sealed bagThe standard retail build; carton is print, bag is shelf life
Sachets, stackedCarton sized to the sachet block, not to a volume of oats
Single-serve potA different product; lidded, and often a bowl as well

Oats go soft, and board does not stop it

Rolled oats take on moisture from the air and lose their texture well before they become unsafe. Folding board is not a moisture barrier, so anything with a dated shelf life needs a sealed inner bag with the carton as the printed outer.

That is the same construction as every other dry cereal, and the reasoning is set out in our cereal carton notes.

Close detail of the print finish on oatmeal boxes

Settling is less of a problem here

  • Oats are small and uniform, so they settle far less than flakes or clusters.
  • A carton sized to poured volume stays close to full, unlike a flaked cereal box.
  • That makes oats one of the few dry goods where the pack genuinely looks full at purchase.
  • It is worth using — a visibly full pack advertises better than any claim on the front.

The panel that has to fit

Ingredients, allergens — oats carry a gluten cross-contamination statement in most markets — nutrition, weight, cooking instructions and storage. The cooking instructions matter more here than in most food categories, because the product is not ready to eat.

Print the cooking method and time large. It is read in a hurry at breakfast and it is the single most-used piece of information on the pack.

Frequently asked questions

Got a question about oatmeal boxes? The answers below cover what we get asked most. If yours is not here, send it with a brief, message us on WhatsApp, or call +1 503-461-4788 — we reply the same working day.

What is the minimum order?

100 cartons, loose or sachet build.

Why did the bottom of my carton fail?

Oats are about twice the density of flaked cereal. Use a locking or auto-lock base rather than heavier board throughout.

Do I need an inner bag?

For any dated shelf life, yes. Board is not a moisture barrier and oats lose texture long before they spoil.

How do I size a sachet carton?

To the sachet block — width, thickness times count, plus a little. Sizing to a weight of oats leaves them rattling.

Will the box look half empty?

Much less than a flaked cereal box. Oats are uniform and settle very little.

Where should the cooking instructions go?

Large, and on a panel that is easy to find. It is read in a hurry at breakfast.
