Settled volume is the only number that matters
Cereal is filled by weight and judged by volume. Between the filling line and the shelf, vibration settles flakes and clusters into each other, and a box filled to the top arrives looking two-thirds full.
Size the carton to the settled volume. Fill a measured weight, shake it hard for a minute, and measure again — that second figure is what the dieline should be built from. Granola settles least; flaked cereals settle most.
The "contents may settle during transit" line on a pack is an admission that the box was sized to the poured volume.
The inner bag is doing the preserving
Board is not a moisture barrier, and cereal goes soft in humidity faster than almost any dry good. Every full-size cereal box has a sealed inner bag, and the carton is the printed outer around it.
That bag has a thickness and a top seal that both take space, so the carton has to be built around a filled bag rather than around the cereal. Fix the bag format before the dieline.
Formats across the range
Oatmeal is the one people under-specify. It is far denser than flaked cereal, so an oatmeal box of the same volume weighs considerably more and needs a stronger base.

Standing up when there is almost nothing in it
- A tall light box topples when a neighbour is lifted off the shelf.
- Widening the base by a few millimeters solves it for a little board.
- A shallower, wider box is more stable and has less shelf presence — a brand decision.
- Board grade affects the lean, not the topple; base area is what matters.
What has to fit on the back
Ingredients, allergens, a full nutrition table, portion guidance, weight and storage. The nutrition grid is the one that cannot be shrunk, and on a narrow carton it takes most of a panel by itself.
Lay it out first at a readable size, then design the front around what is left. It is the same panel-first discipline set out for other dry goods in our food packaging notes.
Print, and the shelf it competes on
Cereal sits on a bright, crowded shelf against packs designed to be seen from several meters. Big, simple, high-contrast artwork wins there; detail is lost entirely.
The other surface worth using is the back, which is read at a breakfast table for several minutes at a time. Very few categories give a brand that much attention, and most cereal brands fill it with a nutrition panel and nothing else.
