How the corner locks

Each corner has a flap with a shaped tab that folds in and pushes through a slot in the adjacent wall. The tab expands behind the slot and holds. Four pushes and the tray is square, with the tabs on the outside or the inside as the design chooses. It comes apart the same way, which matters to nobody at a counter and to everybody at the recycling bin.

Sizing and stacking

A tray is sized to the portion plus a few millimeters and to the sleeve or lid that goes over it. Tapered walls let empty trays nest and full trays stack with a lid or a sheet between. Depth from 25 mm for a sandwich to 80 mm for a loaded dish; a rolled rim on deep trays for stiffness.

Foot lock tabs on the outside are stronger; on the inside they are cleaner-looking. Say which.

Counters that fold hundreds a day

A bakery or a sandwich counter folds trays as it serves. The foot lock is the fastest glue-free tray there is, and it is what most delis are already using unprinted. Printing it is a small step; the die is kept and the trays ship in bundles of 100 or 250.
