Which clear material, and what each one forgives

For anything that will be picked up and put down on a shelf, the anti-scratch coat is the cheapest upgrade you will make. Plain PET looks perfect on day one and hazed by the end of the week.

PET, 0.3–0.5 mmThe standard. Glass-clear, food-contact grade available, scratches under fingernails
Anti-scratch PETHard-coated, survives shelf handling and shipping without hazing
AcetateWarmer clarity, folds cleanly for lid skirts, yellows slightly under long UV
RPETRecycled-content PET, faintly gray against white, fine on a colored base

The three problems a clear lid creates

That third one is worth taking seriously if the box carries any sustainability claim. The rules on what counts as recyclable, and what you can print, are in our note on recyclable, compostable and recycled claims.

  • Fingerprints. The lid is a mirror for hands; a matte anti-glare grade helps, as does a lid skirt that gives people somewhere else to hold.
  • Fogging. Anything moist inside — fresh bakery, a plant, a candle still curing — mists the underside. Vent slots in the base wall solve it.
  • Recycling. A PET lid on a paperboard base goes in two streams. The lid lifts off without glue so it can be separated, and we print the sorting instruction on the base.

Full clear lid or a window

A full clear lid shows the whole top face and lets the base be anything from a kraft tray to a rigid presentation box. A window shows one framed area and keeps the rest of the top surface for print. If you need a large logo above the product, a window is the honest answer; the same trade-off comes up on our window boxes for candles and jars, where the label on the jar usually wins the argument.

The base does all the branding

Because the lid is transparent, the base carries the brand: the walls, the platform the product sits on and the inside floor visible around it. A printed floor in a brand color changes the whole box for the cost of one extra ink. A die-cut platform that holds each item in its own cell turns a tray of six into a display.

Base builds range from a two-piece paperboard tray through a rigid set-up box with a PET lid dropped into a rebate, so the lid sits flush rather than perched.

Print on the base should stop a quarter inch below the lid line. Ink under a PET skirt reads as a smudge through the plastic.

Frequently asked questions

Got a question about clear lid gift boxes? The answers below cover what we get asked most. If yours is not here, send it with a brief, message us on WhatsApp, or call +1 503-461-4788 — we reply the same working day.

Is the lid glass-clear?

PET and acetate both are. RPET has a faint gray cast you will only notice against pure white; on a kraft or colored base it is invisible.

Will the lid scratch in shipping?

Plain PET will haze; the anti-scratch coated grade does not. For anything sold off a shelf we recommend the coated lid.

Can food go in it?

Yes, with food-grade PET and paperboard. Bakery and confectionery are the most common uses; fresh goods need vent slots so the lid does not fog.

Can you print on the clear lid?

A single-color screen or a foil block, yes. Full-color print on PET is possible but covers the thing you bought a clear lid to show.

Is it recyclable?

Both parts are, separately. The lid lifts off without adhesive so it can be sorted, and we print the instruction on the base.

Does the lid fall off in transit?

Not with a skirted lid over a snug base, and on rigid builds the lid drops into a rebate. A shrink band or a belly band adds tamper evidence if you need it.

What holds the product in place?

A die-cut platform or cell insert in the base. Under a clear lid the contents have to look arranged, so most customers add one.

What sizes can you make?

From about 2 × 2 × 1 in up to around 14 × 10 × 4 in. Above that the PET lid flexes and wants a rigid frame.

Can the base be a rigid box?

Yes. A wrapped chipboard base with the lid seated in a rebate is the premium version, used for gift sets and cosmetics.

What is the minimum order?

100 boxes. The lid is die-cut from sheet so the tooling is small, and the base runs like any printed carton.

Will you send a sample?

A white base with a clear lid, yes, so you can check the fit with your actual product before print.

How long does it take?

It depends on the base build and the finish. We give a date with the quote rather than quoting a number before we have seen the spec.
