What it will and will not stick to
The rule is contact. Anything the cling cannot lie completely flat against will let go, usually within a day and always at the corner.

Clean the glass with water rather than a solvent cleaner. Residue from spray cleaners is the commonest reason a new cling falls off.
White or clear, and why it changes the artwork
Clear film lets the background through, so colors sit over whatever is behind the glass and anything light almost disappears. White film is opaque and reproduces color accurately, but reads as a white rectangle on the window.
The usual answer for shopfronts is clear film with a white ink underbase behind the colored areas only — the artwork stays vivid and the unprinted areas stay invisible. It is an extra print layer and it has to be built into the file.
Which side is it read from
Say which side it is going on when you order. It is the single most common and most expensive mistake in this product.
- A cling on the inside of a shop window is read from outside, through the glass.
- That means reverse-printing so the artwork is right-reading from the street.
- A cling on the outside is read directly, and it is exposed to weather and hands.
- Getting this wrong produces a mirrored decal, and it cannot be fixed after printing.
They are reusable, which is most of the point
A seasonal cling comes down without a scraper, goes back in its backing sheet and comes out again next year. For anything that runs annually — Christmas windows, seasonal offers, opening hours that change twice a year — that is a genuine saving over vinyl stickers.
Keep the backing sheet. A cling stored against itself or against a dusty surface loses its grip, and dust is the thing that ends their life rather than wear.
Where a sticker is the better answer
For anything that must not be removed — a permanent notice, a safety marking, something a customer should not be able to peel off — a cling is exactly wrong, because coming off easily is what it is for.
