The hinge, in two materials
In a folding carton the hinge is simply a crease — the lid panel is part of the same blank as the back wall, scored to fold. It is cheap and it works for the life of the board, which on a coated 18 pt is hundreds of openings. In a rigid box the hinge is the wrap paper bridging a gap between two boards, and it is the part that fails on a cheap box: the paper tears at the gap after a few weeks. We use a cloth-reinforced or a heavier wrap across the hinge on rigid builds, and we set the gap to the board thickness so the lid clears the back wall without straining.

Closing it
For a box that is opened every day — a tea box, a jewelry box on a dresser — the tuck or the magnet is right. For a box opened once and kept, the ribbon is theater and it is fine.

- A ribbon tie through the lid and the front wall, for a box opened once.
- A thumb notch and friction fit, where the lid sits inside a lip and stays by tension.
The inside of the lid is the point
A hinged lid opens to about 110 degrees and stands there, and the inside of it faces the customer. That is a full printed panel presented at the right moment, and it is the reason to choose a hinged box over a two-piece one. A message, a pattern, a second color, or a diagram of what is in the tray all work; a plain white inside on a hinged box is a wasted panel.
A hinged lid needs a stop or it falls back flat and strains the hinge. A rigid box gets a stop from the lid skirt; a carton gets it from the flap resting on the back wall.
Sizes and what tends to go in them
Hinged cartons run from a 2 in cube for a ring or a lip balm to about 12 × 9 in for a garment; above that the lid panel flexes. Hinged rigid boxes go larger, to about 16 in, because the board is stiff. The most common uses are jewelry, watches, cosmetics sets, tea and chocolates, and the tray inside is cut to the product in the same way as our mailer boxes with a fitted insert, but in paperboard or flocked foam rather than corrugated.

Boards and films we build hinged lid boxes on
A folding carton is one sheet of board, so the board is the product. These are the stocks we run for cartons, what each is good at, and where it lets you down.
Natural kraft
Unbleached folding board. Warm, hides marks, costs least. Mutes color — one or two flat colors print well, photographs do not.

Solid bleached sulfate: bright, coated, the retail carton standard. Takes accurate color and every finish. Shows scuffs sooner than kraft.

A recycled gray core under a white printing face. Cheaper than SBS and slightly duller; the back of the sheet stays gray.
16–24ptKraft-look coated
A kraft face over a coated inner. The natural look with a barrier behind it — the answer where oil, grease or moisture would mark plain kraft.
14–20ptRecycled-content board
Post-consumer fiber with a gray-brown cast. Right for outers and inner components; poor for bright whites and photography.
16–22ptMicro-flute E and F
A fine corrugated layer where a carton needs structure it cannot get from board — a large panel, a heavy product, a box that ships alone.
E 1.5 mm; F 0.8 mmUncoated and textured
No clay coat, or a linen or laid grain. Print reads softer and warmer; a deboss goes deeper. Photographs do not sit well on it.

Format
Vector PDF or AI where possible. Raster artwork at 300dpi at final size, in CMYK.
Bleed
3 mm past every trim line, so a fraction of drift on the cutter never leaves a white edge.
Safe area
Keep type and anything important 4 mm inside the cut and away from every fold.
Color
Convert to CMYK before sending. Uncoated stock prints lighter; a spot color is the only exact match.
Fonts
Outline them or supply the files. A missing font substitutes silently and the proof will not match.
Barcodes
On a light, matte, unvarnished patch with the quiet zone clear — a code on gloss fails the scanner.

Sizing a folding carton so the die comes out right: hinged lid boxes
Measure the product, not the box it is in now. A carton is built around what has to fit inside it, assembled — cap on, lid fitted, folded if it folds — at its widest point in each direction. Send those three numbers and say which is which.
- Length x width x height
- Internal, always. External dimensions include the board and are what the carrier measures, not what the product needs.
- Clearance
- 2–3 mm a side for a snug fit; more where an insert or void fill goes in. A carton cut exactly to the product is slow to pack and transmits every knock.
- Board thickness
- Heavier board takes internal space from the product. It matters most on small boxes, where four walls of 24pt is a real share of the cavity.
- Varies between batches?
- Glass, textiles, molded parts and cured soap all do. Measure several and build to the largest.
- Cutting tolerance
- Plus or minus 1 mm on folding board. Confirmed on a plain sample before the run.
- Units
- Metric or imperial, as long as you say which. Mixing them in one spec is where mistakes happen.

Will the hinge wear out?
Not on a carton — the crease outlasts the box. On a rigid box the hinge is the wrap paper, so we reinforce it with cloth or a heavier paper and set the gap to the board thickness.
Can the lid have magnets?
Yes, hidden in the front flap and wall. It is the usual closure on a rigid hinged box.
Does the lid stay open?
Yes, at about 110 degrees, with a stop from the lid skirt or the flap so it does not fall back and strain the hinge.
Can I print inside the lid?
Yes, and you should — the inside faces the customer when the box is open. It is the reason to choose a hinged box.

How big can it be?
Up to about 12 × 9 in as a carton, 16 in as rigid. Above that the lid panel flexes and a two-piece box is better.
Can I have a tray inside?
Yes — a die-cut paperboard, flocked or foam tray cut to your product. Send the product and we cut it to fit.
Does the carton version ship flat?
Yes, glued and folded flat. The rigid version ships assembled, or as a collapsible build if you need the freight saving.
Can I have a ribbon closure?
Yes, threaded through the lid and the front wall. It suits a box opened once; for daily use a tuck or a magnet is better.
What is the minimum order for hinged lid boxes?

What adds time to a hinged lid box order?
