Custom Door Hangers

A door hanger is the only advertising that arrives without a letterbox, a stamp or an email address. It is also the only one read while standing in a doorway with a key in one hand, which is not a situation that rewards subtlety.

The hole has to fit a real handle

Door handles vary enormously — a round knob, a lever, a long pull on a flat. A hole cut for one will not go over another, and a hanger that will not hang gets pushed under the door or dropped on the step.

The workable compromise is a hole around 35 mm with a slit running to the top edge, so it can be sprung over a lever as well as dropped over a knob. That slit costs nothing on the same die and roughly doubles the doors you can actually use.

Walk a street and look before ordering. Handle types cluster by housing type, and one round of ten minutes tells you what you need.

Weather is not optional

A hanger might sit on a door for hours or days before anyone comes home. Laminating it is the difference between a message and a piece of pulp.

Uncoated cardCheapest; unreadable after one wet morning
Gloss or matte laminateSurvives rain, curls less, the working default
Synthetic stockEffectively waterproof; for campaigns left out for days

What actually gets read in four seconds

The area below the hole is the whole design. The strip above it wraps over the handle and is mostly hidden, so anything important placed there is not read.

  • One line saying who this is and what they want — at the top, above the hole.
  • A single offer, in numbers, large enough to read at arm's length.
  • One way to respond: a phone number, a QR code, or a website. Not three.
  • Everything else is on the back, for the small number of people who turn it over.

Tear-off coupons change the response rate

A perforated tear-off strip gives the reader something to keep after the hanger goes in the bin — a code, a number, a discount. It converts a four-second read into something that sits on a fridge.

The perforation has to tear cleanly through a laminate, which is a specification rather than an assumption. A coupon that will not tear off is worse than no coupon at all.

Sizes, and what fits a hand and a door

The common sizes are around 4 × 11 in and 5 × 8 in, or A5 and DL equivalents. Bigger reads from further away and blows about in wind; smaller is easier to distribute in quantity and disappears against a busy door.

For a walked campaign, weight per thousand matters too — someone is carrying these around a neighborhood by hand all day.

Frequently asked questions

Got a question about door hangers? The answers below cover what we get asked most. If yours is not here, send it with a brief, message us on WhatsApp, or call +1 503-461-4788 — we reply the same working day.

What size should the hole be?

Around 35 mm with a slit to the top edge, so it fits levers as well as round knobs. The slit costs nothing.

Do they need laminating?

Outdoors, yes. An unlaminated hanger is unreadable after one wet morning, and it may sit there for days.

Where should the offer go?

Below the hole, large. The strip above wraps over the handle and is barely seen.

Are tear-off coupons worth it?

They turn a four-second read into something kept. Just specify a perforation that actually tears through the laminate.

What is the minimum order?

100 hangers, die-cut and printed.

What size hanger works best?

4 × 11 in or 5 × 8 in for most campaigns. Bigger blows about; smaller disappears against a busy door.
