Three paperboard formats we make for cigars
| Slotted drawer box | A sleeve and a sliding tray with a die-cut cradle for 3 to 6 cigars; gift and sampler sets |
|---|---|
| Flip-top pack | A hinged lid over 5, 10 or 20 cigarillos or minis; the format a counter display holds |
| Folded display wrap | A single cigar or a pair held in an angled fold; for tastings and event giveaways |
| Two-piece lid box | Lid over base, with a card bed for a row of cigars; a sampler that opens like a gift |

Ring gauge, length and the slot that holds each one
A cradle slot is cut a little wider than the ring gauge so the cigar drops in without its wrapper being scuffed, and shallow enough that it can be lifted out by the head. A slot that grips too tightly cracks a wrapper leaf when the cigar is pulled; one that is loose lets it roll and rub against its neighbor in transit.
Send the length, the ring gauge and whether the cigars go in bare, banded, in cellophane or in tubes. Cellophane adds a little to the diameter and a tube adds a lot, and the dieline has to know before the cradle is cut.

Where a paperboard cigar box sits next to a cedar one
Paperboard is not a humidor. A box of 20 premium cigars aged for months belongs in cedar. What paperboard does well is everything that leaves the humidor: a sampler of four sticks sold at the register, a pack of cigarillos on the counter, a pair handed out at a wedding or a company dinner. These cigars are smoked within weeks, and the box needs to look right and protect them on the way home, not keep them for years.
For the matching smoking accessories, our boxes for refillable and disposable lighters are built on the same board.
Print and finish on a small, handled box
- Full-color print on SBS, or a natural kraft board for a rustic, tobacco-leaf look.
- Foil stamping in gold or copper on the brand and the vitola name, the details cigar buyers read.
- Embossing on the lid so the logo can be felt; it survives being handled at the counter.
- A matte or soft-touch laminate inside a drawer box keeps fingerprints off a dark print.
- A printed inner tray, so the slot area carries the blend or the tasting notes.
Panels a tobacco box has to carry
Tobacco packaging in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia carries mandatory health warnings, and the rules on size, wording and placement differ by market and by product. We leave the panels you specify clear and print the warning artwork you supply at the size you give us. The wording and its compliance are the brand’s responsibility, and we print exactly what is approved.
Tell us the market the boxes are sold in, so the dieline reserves the right panels for the warning before design starts.
Sampler sets, events and the counter
Most cigar box orders are not for a single blend. A lounge builds a four-cigar sampler of its house range, a maker packs a launch set for retailers, and an event planner orders a few hundred two-cigar boxes printed with a date and a name. Each of these is short-run work, which is why the minimum is 100 boxes per design. Our wider range of tobacco and smoking packaging covers the rest of the counter.

On every job

- A cutting die per size, made once and kept. Foil and emboss dies per artwork, also kept.

Boards and films we build cigar boxes on
A folding carton is one sheet of board, so the board is the product. These are the stocks we run for cartons, what each is good at, and where it lets you down.
Natural kraft
Unbleached folding board. Warm, hides marks, costs least. Mutes color — one or two flat colors print well, photographs do not.
250–350gsm sleeves; 14–24pt cartonsWhite SBS
Solid bleached sulfate: bright, coated, the retail carton standard. Takes accurate color and every finish. Shows scuffs sooner than kraft.
14–24ptWhite lined chipboard
A recycled gray core under a white printing face. Cheaper than SBS and slightly duller; the back of the sheet stays gray.
16–24ptKraft-look coated
A kraft face over a coated inner. The natural look with a barrier behind it — the answer where oil, grease or moisture would mark plain kraft.
14–20ptRecycled-content board
Post-consumer fiber with a gray-brown cast. Right for outers and inner components; poor for bright whites and photography.
16–22ptMicro-flute E and F
A fine corrugated layer where a carton needs structure it cannot get from board — a large panel, a heavy product, a box that ships alone.
E 1.5 mm; F 0.8 mmUncoated and textured
No clay coat, or a linen or laid grain. Print reads softer and warmer; a deboss goes deeper. Photographs do not sit well on it.
280–350gsmMetalized and pearlescent
A metallic or pearl face for a shelf that needs to catch light. Costly, and it fights a photograph — a mark or a pattern suits it better.
16–20ptNot sure which? Say what goes in it and where it is sold — the material follows from that. Our notes on recycled, recyclable and compostable cover which claims each stock can honestly carry.

Send what you have
A dimension, a photograph beside a ruler, or the product itself. No technical drawing needed — that part is ours.
- 02
We quote and draw
A price, a dieline and a date come back together. If a different build would suit the product better, that is in the reply too.
- 03
Approve the dieline
The flat drawing is yours to check: which panel is the front, where the folds fall, how deep the cavity really is.
- 04
Artwork on the dieline
You place your design on the flat we sent, or we place it for you, and you see a proof before anything goes to press.
- 05
A sample if you want one
A plain unprinted sample at the finished size shows fit and construction — the things a drawing cannot.
- 06
Cut, printed, shipped
The die is cut once and kept, so every reorder skips the tooling and goes straight to press at a lower unit price.
Format
Vector PDF or AI where possible. Raster artwork at 300dpi at final size, in CMYK.
Bleed
3 mm past every trim line, so a fraction of drift on the cutter never leaves a white edge.
Safe area
Keep type and anything important 4 mm inside the cut and away from every fold.
Color
Convert to CMYK before sending. Uncoated stock prints lighter; a spot color is the only exact match.
Fonts
Outline them or supply the files. A missing font substitutes silently and the proof will not match.
Barcodes
On a light, matte, unvarnished patch with the quiet zone clear — a code on gloss fails the scanner.
Not set up that way? Send it anyway — fixing a file is a short conversation, and we check every one before press. Our guide to preparing print files covers each point.
Every finish here is a decision about light on a shelf, not about luxury.
Matte lamination
Reads considered, hides marks, takes a ballpoint.
Gloss lamination
Lifts color; glares under shop lighting.
Soft-touch
Velvet in the hand; shows fingerprints in a bag.
Hot foil
Real metal leaf — the most reliable premium signal.
Emboss / deboss
Shape with no ink; works in the dark.
Spot UV
Gloss shapes on a matte field.
Uncoated kraft
Warm, natural, mutes color.
Textured stock
Texture in the paper; cannot scuff off.
Not sure which suits the shelf it sells from? Say where the product is sold and we suggest one — our notes on specialty finishes show them on real boxes.
Sizing a folding carton so the die comes out right: cigar boxes
Measure the product, not the box it is in now. A carton is built around what has to fit inside it, assembled — cap on, lid fitted, folded if it folds — at its widest point in each direction. Send those three numbers and say which is which.
- Length x width x height
- Internal, always. External dimensions include the board and are what the carrier measures, not what the product needs.
- Clearance
- 2–3 mm a side for a snug fit; more where an insert or void fill goes in. A carton cut exactly to the product is slow to pack and transmits every knock.
- Board thickness
- Heavier board takes internal space from the product. It matters most on small boxes, where four walls of 24pt is a real share of the cavity.
- Varies between batches?
- Glass, textiles, molded parts and cured soap all do. Measure several and build to the largest.
- Cutting tolerance
- Plus or minus 1 mm on folding board. Confirmed on a plain sample before the run.
- Units
- Metric or imperial, as long as you say which. Mixing them in one spec is where mistakes happen.
Not sure your numbers are right? Send the product dimensions rather than the box dimensions and we work the box out — the full method is in our guide to measuring for a box.

Frequently asked questions
Got a question about cigar boxes? The answers below cover what we get asked most. If yours is not here, send it with a brief, message us on WhatsApp, or call +1 503-461-4788 — we reply the same working day.
What size cigar box do I need for a toro or robusto?
Send the length and ring gauge, for example 6 x 50 or 5 x 50. We cut each slot slightly wider than the gauge and the tray a little longer than the cigar.
How many cigars can a paperboard cigar box hold?
Drawer and lid boxes usually hold 3 to 6 premium cigars in cradles. Flip-top packs hold 5, 10 or 20 cigarillos or minis.
Can a cigar box hold cigars in tubes or cellophane?
Yes. Tell us before the dieline is drawn, because cellophane and tubes change the slot diameter the cradle needs.
Are paperboard cigar boxes good for long-term storage?
No. They are for cigars that leave the humidor and are smoked within weeks: samplers, counter packs and event gifts. Aging belongs in cedar.
Can cigar boxes carry the health warning for my market?
Yes. We reserve the panels you specify and print the warning artwork you supply. The wording and its compliance stay with the brand.
Can I put a different blend in each slot of a cigar sampler box?
Yes. The inner tray can be printed with the name of the blend under each cradle, so the buyer knows which cigar is which.
Which finishes suit a cigar box?
Gold or copper foil on the brand and vitola name, embossing on the lid, and a matte laminate that keeps a dark print clean when handled.
Can I order cigar boxes for a wedding or a corporate event?
Yes. Two-cigar boxes printed with names and a date are a common order, from 100 boxes per design.
Do you make flip-top cigarillo packs?
Yes. A hinged-lid pack cut to the length of the cigarillo, holding 5, 10 or 20, printed on every panel for a counter display.
Can a cigar box be made in kraft board?
Yes. Natural kraft gives a plain, earthy look that suits a tobacco brand, and it takes one or two colors of print well.
Will the slots scratch the cigar wrapper?
Not when the cradle is cut to the gauge with a small allowance. A slot that is too tight is what cracks a wrapper leaf.
