Rows, pieces and the weight on the scale
Baklava is sold by weight or by count, but it is packed by the row. A tray sized to your cut holds the pieces in straight lines so the box looks full when it is opened, and so the diamonds do not slide into each other and tear their edges. We size the tray from the cut piece and the number of rows, and work out which sizes match the weights you sell: a quarter, a half, a whole kilo or the pound equivalents.
Mixed boxes are the other common order: pistachio, walnut, rolls and bird nests side by side. Those get a tray with low dividers so each kind keeps its own row.
Living with syrup
- The tray or base is a grease-resistant food board, so syrup that drains from the pieces stays on the surface.
- A glassine or greaseproof liner under the rows catches what drips and lifts out with the last piece.
- Paper cups or a molded insert keep each piece apart in premium boxes, so nothing sticks to its neighbor.
- The lid sits above the pastry, never on it, so a pressed lid does not pick up syrup and pull the top layer off.

A gift box that says where the baklava is from
Most baklava boxes carry the name of the bakery and the city it is in, because the place is part of what is being given. Gold foil on a deep green, navy or black is the classic finish and reads as a gift before the lid is lifted. A pattern border or a band of geometric ornament gives the same effect on a kraft box at a lower cost. For holiday runs we often print the box once and change a sleeve or a sticker for each season. Travel, shelf life and labeling
Baklava keeps for days at room temperature, so it travels: in luggage, by post, across the country to family. A tray box with a tight tuck or a lid with a sleeve stays closed in a bag; a window box should travel inside an outer carton so the film is not pressed into the pastry. The back or base panel carries the ingredients, the nut allergen line, the weight and the best-before date, printed or labeled per batch.
Send one row of your pieces and the weight of a full box. The tray, the row count and the depth are all taken from that.
Small boxes for tasting and favors
Not every baklava box is a kilo. Wedding favors, hotel turndown gifts and a tasting box at the counter hold two to six pieces, and at that size the box is closer to a jewelry box than a tray: a small two-piece or sleeve box with a single liner, printed with the couple or the hotel rather than the bakery. These run at the same minimum per size and can share the artwork of the larger gift box so the range looks like one family.

Boards and films we build baklava boxes on
Food packaging is chosen for what the food does to it: grease, steam, heat and time. Every board here is food-contact grade, and none of them uses a PFAS treatment for grease resistance.
Food-grade virgin board
Bleached board made for direct food contact. Clean, bright, no recycled fiber and no mineral-oil risk from recovered paper.
14–24ptGrease-resistant board
Resistance built into the sheet rather than sprayed on. Holds fries, pastry and butter without darkening. PFAS-free.
16–24ptPE-lined cupstock
Board with a polyethylene film for hot and cold liquid. Microwave-safe for reheating; recycled only where cup collection exists.
260–350gsmAqueous-lined cupstock
A water-based lining instead of PE. Repulpable in ordinary paper recycling in more places, and compostable; a slightly shorter hold time.

Dense, calendered paper that resists fat through the fiber. Wraps, liners and interleaves; breathable, so pastry stays crisp.

Format
Vector PDF or AI where possible. Raster artwork at 300dpi at final size, in CMYK.
Bleed
3 mm past every trim line, so a fraction of drift on the cutter never leaves a white edge.
Safe area
Keep type and anything important 4 mm inside the cut and away from every fold.
Color
Convert to CMYK before sending. Uncoated stock prints lighter; a spot color is the only exact match.
Fonts
Outline them or supply the files. A missing font substitutes silently and the proof will not match.
Barcodes
On a light, matte, unvarnished patch with the quiet zone clear — a code on gloss fails the scanner.

Food finishes are limited by what may touch food, and that is the point.
Food-safe inks
Printed on the outer face only. Every food pack we make uses them, laminated or not.
Uncoated kraft
No coating at all. Breathable, so pastry stays crisp, and it takes one or two colors.
Aqueous varnish
Scuff resistance without a plastic film, so the pack still repulps.
Molded emboss
A logo pressed into pulp or bagasse. No ink, nothing to rub off, and it survives grease.
Grease-resistant face
Not a finish you can see. It is in the sheet, it is PFAS-free, and it is why the print stays clean.
Matte lamination
Available on outers and sleeves that never touch food — a cake box lid, a carrier, a gift sleeve.

Sizing food packaging around a portion, hot: baklava boxes
Food is sized by serving, not by dimensions, and it is served hot, heaped and in a hurry. Send us the portion — or better, the box you use now with the food in it — and we size to how it is actually filled.
- Portion, heaped
- Fries, popcorn and salad are served above the rim. A box sized to a level fill looks mean and spills in a bag.
- Lid clearance
- Enough that a loaded burger or a topped cake does not touch the lid. This is the single most common complaint about a food box.
- Venting
- Hot food steams. Vents in the lid keep pastry and fries crisp; a sealed box is right only for cold food.
- Grease path
- Where the fat sits decides the board. Say if the food is fried, buttered or sauced, and whether it is held for minutes or an hour.
- Stacking in a bag
- Delivery boxes are stacked five high on a bike. The lid has to hold the box above it off the food below.

How do you size a baklava box?
From one cut piece, the number of rows and the weight you sell the box at. The tray is drawn so the rows sit straight and the box looks full when opened.
Will syrup from baklava stain the box?
Not the inside of the tray. The base is grease-resistant board, and a glassine liner catches the syrup that drains from the rows.
Can a baklava box hold several kinds side by side?
Yes. Low dividers keep pistachio, walnut, rolls and nests in their own rows without crushing them.
Do you make baklava boxes with a window?
Yes. A PET window in the lid shows the rows on a shelf. That box should travel inside an outer carton.
What baklava box is best for a wedding or a holiday gift?
A rigid wrapped box with foil, or a two-piece paperboard box with a sleeve. Both read as a gift before they are opened.
